I am writing to you as a concerned constituent to urge you to take immediate and decisive action in response to the under-staffing in our hospitals.

There are not enough doctors in our public health services and across our hospitals in both Adelaide and regional South Australia and this is placing our health at risk and burning out SA doctors.

As my elected representative I implore you to advocate for the following three measures to attract and retain enough doctors in South Australia’s public health system to make it safer for the community, and safer for doctors.

1. Train more local doctors in SA
Australia has a well-documented shortage of doctors. In South Australia, there must be about 80 additional medical student places across the new Adelaide University and Flinders University each year from 2026, as part of more than 1,000 extra places across Australia. I urge you to lobby the Federal Government on behalf of your constituents.

2. Develop a detailed medical workforce plan for SA
Unbelievably, there is no detailed medical workforce plan for SA's public health system. The State Government must take up the offer from SASMOA to jointly develop a new Minimum Medical Staffing Plan before March 2026, and hold the SA Health Chief Executive accountable for its delivery.

3. Recruit, attract and retain medical staff in SA
The medical workforce plan will identify the number of doctors required to meet community need. The State Government must provide wages and conditions that will attract and retain doctors to work in South Australia’s public hospitals and health services, instead of alternative locations. SA's junior doctors are currently among the lowest paid in the nation, but with the heaviest workloads, and senior doctors are required to both service our community and train junior doctors.

Your support in raising these issues with the Premier, Health Minister, and relevant government departments, is crucial to making a significant difference in the health of your local constituents.
